This weekend marks the start of the annual Plein Air Festival, put on by the Peninsula School of Art. The festival attracts some of the country’s most talented plein air painters who pop up at locations all over the peninsula to put brush to canvas and capture the scenes of the peninsula. Dance enthusiasts are excited for the first Death’s Door Dance Festival as well. Door County will welcome dance movers, makers and shakers from across the Midwest. On Friday, the Wickman House hosts a pop-up performance of guest artists. On Saturday, the Ephraim and Sister Bay village halls will host free, public classes where all – beginner to advanced, flamenco to yoga – are welcome to learn. Saturday evening, the artist lineup will expand at the Sister Bay Beach performance pavilion with choreographers from Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Houston and Durham sharing an array of dance aesthetics. Take your beach blanket or folding chair, pack a cooler and celebrate the joy of dance. More here>>

On Thursday the venerable Florian II Supper Club turns into a dance club at 10 pm with DJ Soulechter spinning for Ladies Club Night. If you’re looking for a more chill vibe, grab a seat on the lawn at Kendall Park behind the Baileys Harbor town hall for the throwback country soul tunes of Frank Maloney and His Big Country Unit from 5-7 pm. And if you’re ready to get down, then up to Husby’s Saturday or Sunday night (or both!) for the Big Wu, playing from 8-11 pm at the Garage Bar. And on Sunday afternoon get music served with laughs with Pat McCurdy at the Cherry Hut in Fish Creek. That’s just a taste of a long list of live music events to check out>>

Then there’s a tribute to a local legend at Doc Heide’s 70th birthday bash and concert at Door Community Auditorium Sunday at 8 pm. The beloved performer and co-founder of Northern Sky Theater will be  celebrated with a  concert of his songs sung by talented friends from around the nation. 

Three Springs Nature Preserve is open for discovery Saturday morning at 10 am for a volunteer-led hike of the Land Trust preserve outside Sister Bay. 

Crossroads at Big Creek will host a different sort of climate change perspective on Saturday at 6 pm. Joel Charles, M.D., MPH will present “Good Medicine: How Health Professionals and Systems Can Make Their Patients and Communities Healthier While Fighting Climate Change.” And if you want a different look at the world above, head to Universe in the Park at Newport State Park at 8:30 pm to join guest astronomers from UW-Madison for a PowerPoint presentation and a chance to view the night skies through a high-powered telescope. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and flashlights or headlamps with a red lens. More here>>

Love history and looking at life on the farm? Check out the Antique Tractor Show and Art Fest at the Liberty Grove Historical Society grounds overlooking bay on Saturday and Sunday. Great for kids with hay wagons and pony rides, music, and food (and of course, big antique tractors!). In Sturgeon Bay, entertain the kids at Chalk the Bay to cover 3rd Avenue with chalk Art July 23 from 10-noon. Sunday night Waterfront Park in Sister Bay turns into a theater for a showing of Encanto at dusk. 

Check out spectacular homes, gardens and artists in the House and Garden Walk to support Door County Medical Center Skilled Nursing Facility and Hospice Care. The walk takes place from 9 am – 5 pm July 26. Tickets are $40 in advance.
