The Metro Arts Community Center, one of Louisville Parks and Recreation’s 13 community centers, is offering classes for local painters to be instructed on the technique of plein air painting, while enjoying the serene sights at four different Louisville Metro Parks. The courses are the first of their kind offered by Metro Arts. Plein air is a French term, which translates to “the act of painting outdoors." The technique dates to the early 1800s and was used by impressionists such as Claude Monet and Mary Cassatt. “We are so excited to be able to intertwine peoples’ love for art and love for our parks,” Director of Louisville Parks and Recreation Margaret Brosko said. “This is a great opportunity for artists to enjoy a sense of community and improve their craft in a unique way.” Classes are the first two Saturdays in September and October from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at various parks. This series is designed for experienced artists, and each participant will be responsible for bringing their own supplies, seating and portable easel. All mediums are welcome, including but not limited to, acrylic, oil or watercolor. The fee for each class is $10 (paid at registration). The course consists of four different classes, each instructed by George Taylor Jr. – a well-regarded artist who has taught at the Metro Arts Community Center for many years. “I am so thankful for all of the people that came together to make this course happen through Metro Arts,” George Taylor Jr. said. “This is unlike anything we have done before, and I can't wait to use natural light and inspiration from the beauty of our local parks to guide other artists through this journey.” To register for the Plein Air in the Park course, visit bestparksever.com and click on “Recreation Class Registration.” More information on each class and the location is listed below: · Saturday, September 3: Waverly Park, 4800 Waverly Park Road 40214 · Saturday, September 10: Cherokee Park, 745 Cochran Hill Road 40206 · Saturday, October 1, Charlie Vettiner Park, 5550 Charlie Vettiner Road 40299 · Saturday, October 10, Joe Creason Park, 1297 Trevilian Way 40203
