BERKELEY SPRINGS — The Morgan Arts Council presents The Artbarn in Amaranth — Farm to easel show, an art show curated by Irena Chambers. The show is on exhibit beginning Sept. 23 thru Nov. 6, 2022. Gallery hours are Thursday thru Sunday, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.

The Artbarn in Amaranth, an artist residency program, was started over five years ago in a building that replaced an old structure destroyed by fire. The main purpose of the Artbarn is to offer experienced urban artists the opportunity to create in a visually stimulating and comfortable location, away from the pressures, sounds, and sights of their city life. To date, the Artbarn has hosted four artists. Leroy Johnson from Philadelphia has created paintings, drawings, pottery and assemblages inspired by contemporary events as well as memories. Kitty Caparella, a native Philadelphian with a long career of investigative journalism focusing on the mafia, has created works featuring mafia figures, lifestyles and more. Maya Kramer , who currently lives in Shanghai, is a sculptor, painter and creator of immersive art works. Tim Schouten, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, works in encaustic, acrylic, watercolor, and collage that explores the land, Aboriginal peoples and human life.

Curator Irena Chambers works in oil, watercolor, pastel and multi-media to create both representational paintings and collages as well as abstract works. She co-founded the Artbarn with her husband and enjoys working in and attempting to capture the special nature of the Appalachian landscape.

The “Farm to Easel” exhibition will feature work from each of these artists, drawing on pieces created before, during and after their residencies.

Also participating as Hallway Artists at the Ice House in the Hall of Dreams and the Carr-Kelly Gallery will be photographers Charles Bowers, David Mullen and John Carter presenting the show, “The World Around You”- views of the bounties of the natural world.

There will be an opening reception for both of these shows 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24.

Grant support for these programs comes in part from the National Endowment for the Arts, the West Virginia Commission on the Arts and local hotel/motel taxes. The Ice House is at the corner of Independence and Mercer Streets in downtown Berkeley Springs, WV. Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information on this and other MAC activities, call 304-258-2300 or visit www.macicehouse.org.
