EARTHBOUND: The new national juried competition and exhibition at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies, “Elemental Effects: Water + Wind + Earth + Fire,” opens this Saturday, June 11 – described as a “venturous exhibition (that) pays tribute to the diverse effects of water, wind, earth, and fire during the art making process.” The show includes 2D and 3D pieces interpreting intersections of art with science and design.

Juror Linda Weintraub has curated more than 50 exhibitions and practices eco art as an author, educator, curator, practitioner and homesteader, championing the outposts of vanguard experimentation in the arts as they have evolved over the decades. She is the author of essays and books exploring contemporary art and ecology as well as a series of textlets on ecocentric art topics.

“ It will also describe the emotional fulfillment afforded by cultivating rapport with the environs, a source of gratification that human-centered design typically lacks,” Weintraub said. “ My engagement with biophilic design principles extends beyond these architectural and landscaping ventures. They also inspire my homesteading practices, my curating, art-making, and writing. Indeed, they provide the ethical foundation for all my beliefs and behaviors.”

The following day, Sunday, June 12, she will offer an eco art workshop from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., focusing on the diversity and dynamism of temperature, which together account for life on Earth, and inviting participants to engage with fire (via matches) and ice (via ice cubes) in order to explore how such intimate interactions apply to climate change on a global scale. The workshop is $10 and preregistration is required.
