Made for Walking: The fourth annual Beach Haven Art Walk is Saturday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Presented by the Beach Haven Chamber of Commerce since 2017, the Art Walk – a fine arts and crafts festival along Bay Avenue between Pearl and Eighth Streets – is a growing “cultural community experience” that celebrates the arts and culture in Beach Haven and the whole Island. Visit artists presenting an eclectic mix of visual art, music, culture and family. A designated Kiddie Zone offers crafts, games and fun. Bring the whole family, including pets. Enjoy dining, entertainment and shopping in Historic Beach Haven to complement the Walk.
Scene and Done: Watercolor creations by Frank Folinus are on display through June at the Barnegat branch of the Ocean County Library. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
A visitor to Ocean County since 1955 and a full-time resident since 1972, Folinus taught carpentry and was an administrator and principal at Ocean County Vocational-Technical Schools. An aunt taught him to paint with oils when he was 5 years old. Nowadays he prefers watercolor. He also builds electric guitars and paints them thematically.
“I never had time to paint when I had a family and work,” he said.
As a lifelong boating, fishing and surfing enthusiast, he paints his love of the outdoors, especially Barnegat, Waretown and Forked River. Folinus wants his work “to give the viewer a peaceful feeling and appreciation for the history and wonderful scenery in Ocean County,” he said.
Beauty Squared: Gardens + artists = exquisite!
Pine Shores Art Association painters will work en plein air at each house and garden in the Garden Club of Long Beach Island’s Outside Living Garden Tour and Art Show on Wednesday, June 15. Visitors will enjoy and sample the art as they tour the gardens and meet award-winning local artists.
Five spectacular LBI gardens will be open for exploration and delight. A hidden cottage, a sparkling pool, wildlife habitats, thriving vegetable gardens, fish ponds and fountains are just a few of the amenities. Landscapers will be on hand to answer questions and give advice.
In addition, the three gardens maintained by the members of the garden club will be on the tour. The Edith Duff Gwinn Gardens, the Pollinator Garden and the Beach Haven Library Garden will be dressed in their summer best.
Pine Shores artists have donated original paintings for lucky ticketholders.
“From the tiniest periwinkle to the giant hibiscus, our gardens will burst with summer color and creativity,” according to tour chair Judie Alloway. “Visitors will see the latest in outdoor living, as well – all to enjoy and apply at home.”
Tickets are a $40 donation. Email Judie at spajla3@aol.com or Bonnie at johnbon1599@comcast.net. Proceeds for the Outside Living Garden and Art Tour support the club’s community service on LBI, including environmental projects, college scholarships for local students, senior and children’s horticultural programs and the ongoing practice of good gardening. The club now numbers 190 members. Information on how to join is on the website thegardencluboflbi.org.
Visit LBIF: The National Juried Exhibition: Works on Paper opened mid-April at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies. Stop by LBIF and peruse the walls of the Main Gallery; marvel at the myriad ways paper can be utilized, transformed and elevated. The 24th annual competition includes drawings, paintings on paper, hand-pulled prints, photographs, digital works and paper constructions.
The next national juried competition and exhibition, “Elemental Effects: Water + Wind + Earth + Fire,” opens June 11 – described as a “venturous exhibition (that) pays tribute to the diverse effects of water, wind, earth, and fire during the art making process.” The show includes 2D and 3D pieces interpreting intersections of art with science and design.
Juror Linda Weintraub has curated more than 50 exhibitions and practices eco art as an author, educator, curator, practitioner and homesteader, championing the outposts of vanguard experimentation in the arts as they have evolved over the decades. She is the author of essays and books exploring contemporary art and ecology as well as a series of textlets on ecocentric art topics.
