Get Out There: Be part of Pine Shores Art Association’s “Plein Air in Pine Air” on Thursday, March 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Franklin Parker Preserve, the Chatsworth Lake entrance, and find inspiration amid 11,000 acres of forested wetlands.
On Thursday, March 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Tip Seaman County Park in Tuckerton, set up on the shore of Lake Pohatcong, across from the Seaport entrance.
“Let’s meet outside,” organizer Andrea Sauchelli invites. “The light all around here is terrific, colors sing, forests enchant, inland and ocean waters make spirits soar. We’ve spent too much time indoors hiding from the pandemic. Revel in our beautiful area and enjoy the company of other artists. Come out to paint!”
All Pine Shores memberships (adults, $35 per person; $60 per couple; $25 for teens) can be created or renewed online or by sending a check to Linda Blum, P.O. Box 5, West Creek, N.J. 08092.
At PSAA headquarters, located at 94 Stafford Ave., free recurring monthly events on Thursdays are “Do Your Own Thing,” 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and “Artists Helping Artists,” 2:30 to 5 p.m. (call 609-713-7337 to register for either); and untutored portrait drawing sessions with a live model, 7 to 9 p.m. Drop in for a $5 model fee. An additional DYOT session has been added on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. (email pvh3dwh@aol.com to register). Also free on Monday afternoons, noon to 3 p.m., DYOT with PSAA at Bay Avenue Community Center. Water-based mediums only, no oils or solvents.
The new show up in the Pine Shores gallery is the Black and White Show, in which all works were created using only pure black and white to make shades of gray – no other colors mixed to make black, and no accent colors.
Back to Basics: One Saturday each month, get a free introduction to the building blocks of drawing with instructors at Pine Shores Art Association in Manahawkin. Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., learn from legendary painter/illustrator Tom Rutledge and make drawings well worthy of a spot on the fridge. The three-hour class is free to all, no registration required, and supplies are provided; only 24 seats are available.
“(The) program will cover what you need to know to get started on your creative journey into the world of art,” the organization promises. Not just for beginners, the primer can also refresh fundamental skills. Each month will feature a new medium and artist-instructor. Email questions to PSAAeducation@gmail.com.
A Time for Peace: View photographer Carol Stauffer’s “Seasons of Life” – an exhibit of nature-centered images infused with spiritual messages – during the month of March at the Barnegat branch of the Ocean County Library System. Stauffer views nature as “a living canvas of beauty, harmony and wisdom.”
She grew up in rural Pennsylvania, exploring with her Kodak Brownie camera. Her later studies in education and dance and massage therapies brought the mind-body-spirit connection more sharply into focus for her. “Seasons of Life” is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the library at 609-698-3331 or visit theoceancountylibrary.org/events.
Show and Sell: Summer art show applications are open for the following area shows: Viking Village Shows, vikingvillageshows.com; St. Francis Spring Craft/Art Show and Sale, festivalnet.com; Harvey Cedars Arts Festival, harveycedars.org; and the Beach Haven Art Walk, beachhavenchamber.com/art-walk.
Bunk’s Back: Artist Jessie Wolfrom, a.k.a. Bunkerfish, returns to Beach Haven this spring with The Bunkhouse, her new venture opening in Schooner’s Wharf on Memorial Day weekend. Affectionately named after the back shack on her grandmother’s property, The Bunkhouse will feature a handmade boutique, vintage finds, a working studio, and a creative space for weekly art workshops. Follow along for updates and class schedules on Instagram @thebunkhouselbi.
Astir: The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies has reawakened to an event-filled 2022. Artists’ submissions are sought for the upcoming exhibition season. Visit lbifoundation.org for details.
LBIF’s artist-in-residence Linda Ramsay’s upstairs studio is open for “Do Your Own Thing” on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, for making art in any medium. Sign up online in advance for five hours of studio time, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for $25. Layered clothing is advised; the studio runs chilly or warm depending on the weather. Pack lunch and BYOAS (bring your own art supplies). Glass palettes, easels, stools, tables and chairs are provided. The second-floor studio is not ADA accessible. Use the exterior stairs on the north side of the main building.
