Our new exhibition at mIXt Food Hall, “A Family Affair”, February 1 – April 17, 2022 (Artist Reception March 19, 2022)

“A Family Affair” is an exhibition of intergenerational painters featuring Andrew DoBos, Dawn Capron, and Bethany Harrington. Andrew DoBos (1897-1985) was Dawn Capron’s grandfather, and Dawn is Bethany Harrington’s grandmother. Dawn most takes after her grandfather in style, but all three artists share a love for painting. The exhibition is located in miXt’s Corner Space, Loft Gallery, and throughout the food hall.

Andrew DoBos was born in 1897 in Lusina, Poland. He immigrated with his family to America in 1911 and starting as a young teen worked deep in the coal mines of McAlester, Oklahoma. With the help of a scholarship, Andrew was able to attend the Chicago Art Institute. Later in life, he described to his granddaughter Dawn how while working evenings cleaning studios, he would collect larger drips of paint left on the easels or floor by students during the day and transfer them to his palette.

Prior to becoming an artist, Dawn was an educator in the public schools and held a variety of positions including teacher and principal. She lives in Annapolis and Olney, MD, and travels frequently. The quiet marshes of the Chesapeake, rocky shores of New England, and ancient folded mountains of Appalachia provide rich material for her easel.

At this stage, for Bethany, art is play and passion. Her profession is teaching. She earned her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Maryland and is currently completing her Master’s degree in Equity and Administration. Bethany is in her sixth year of teaching, currently fourth grade. Bethany primarily works in oils.

miXt is honored to be a resource for artists and the arts district community. There is something for everyone here at miXt Food Hall. “A Family Affair” is curated by John Paradiso
